Although
Downtown Bookworks is brand new (and we’re all youthful
and vibrant!), we have 50 years’ worth of collective publishing
experience.
PRESIDENT
Julie Merberg began her publishing career as
an editor doing stints at Simon & Schuster, Ballantine, and
Perigee before trying her hand at packaging. At Roundtable Press,
Inc., where she was a partner for seven years, she developed successful
publishing programs for brands as diverse as gURL.com and Parents
magazine, as well as authoring a series of children’s books
for Chronicle, and conceiving and packaging topical titles with
expert authors. Julie founded Downtown Bookworks Inc. in February,
2005 so that she could create books for other busy women and their
families. As a mother of four boys, Julie is also committed to
producing books that will thoroughly engage and entertain children
while teaching them a thing or two. She lives four blocks from
the office with her husband and kids and runs laps around the
neighborhood when she’s
not at her desk.
SENIOR
VICE PRESIDENT Patty
Brown has been creating books for every major publisher
in most major non-fiction categories for longer than it actually
feels: twenty-two years as a partner at John Boswell Associates,
three years as an executive editor at Roundtable Press, Inc. (where
she met Julie Merberg), and the past three years here at Downtown
Bookworks Inc. George Plimpton, Mel Brooks, Tom Meehan, John Waters,
Mark O’Donnell, Henry Beard, Sean Kelly, Tony Hendra, and
Ron and Judi Barrett are a few of the writers she’s been
fortunate enough to work with over the course of her almost thirty-year
career. She is the co-author of four books: three with New
Yorker cartoonist, Victoria Roberts, and one, a New York
Times bestseller, with Mad Magazine illustrator,
Will Elder. She has a particular interest in developing teen and
tween titles. Recent projects include: the ARTfully Inspired
craft series (Chronicle Books, 2009); The Marshmallow Incident
by Ron and Judi Barrett (Scholastic, 2009); What Was I Thinking?
by Barabara Davilman and Liz Dubilman (St. Martins, 2009); and
Around the World Cookbook by Abigail Dodge (DK, 2008).
SENIOR
VICE PRESIDENT Pam
Abrams joined Downtown Bookworks in 2006. A 20+ year
veteran of the magazine business (Harper’s, Parents, Child)
and editorial executive at eToys.com and Scholastic, Pam is now
focusing her editorial skills on producing books. Pam’s
passions include children, cooking, food, crafts, parenting, women’s
health, psychology, and work issues. She primarily produces books
in these categories, with a keen eye for beautiful photography,
sensational styling and fabulous illustration. She is also the
author of several books: Now I Eat My ABCs (Cartwheel),
Gadgetology (Harvard Common Press), and The
Only Bake Sale Book You'll Ever Need (Morrow; co-authored
with Laurie Goldrich Wolf). Pam serves on the Board of Directors
of several foundations and organizations. She lives with her family
in Brooklyn, NY.
EDITOR
Working
on infotainment titles such as the annual TIME for Kids Almanac
has made history buff Sarah Parvis the go-to
gal when it comes to all things trivia. She is also Downtown Bookworks’
resident puzzlemaster, having worked on hundreds of picture puzzles
for LIFE magazine, TIME for Kids, and Sports
Illustrated Kids. Before joining Downtown Bookworks, Sarah
Parvis had a bustling freelance career as a writer, researcher,
and photo editor (skills that have come in very handy!). She has
written Ghost Towns, Haunted Hotels, Creepy
Castles, The Quotable Feast, Good Girls Finish
Last, and The Kennedy Mystique, and handled the
photo research for projects ranging from science to Stetson hats
to America’s First Ladies.
EDITOR-AT-LARGE
Downtown Bookworks’
resident pop culture maven, Sara Newberry came
to publishing (and New York!) after working for several years
as a cook and chef in her hometown of Dallas, Texas. During her
four years at Roundtable Press, Inc., she honed her skills in
production, photo research, and copyediting, working on numerous
projects, including the Teen People Celebrity Beauty Guide
and Will & Grace: Uncensored.
She also put her culinary skills to work editing a number of cookbooks
including several Atkins titles, and the Half-Baked Gourmet
series.
